Last night, we were out at Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner and I was in the mood for a beer to help wash down my wings. I asked our server for the beer selections and nothing special really jumped out at me. Mainly the major breweries with all their "Ultras" and "Lights" and variants of the same yellow water... They did have a "craft" section, but very few selections under it. But I wanted one anyways and I saw "Woodchuck" at the bottom of the list. I had no idea what it was, where it was from, or what kind of beer it was but I thought I'd give it a try anyways. Boy was I in for a surprise.
The waitress set the glass down and I loved the beautiful caramel color. My first thoughts was "all right, a nice amber ale." However, I should have known something was different from the lack of any head on top. I lifted the glass for the first sip and smelled it like I usually do. Apples? I was a little confused. I was expecting a hops / malt smell, not apple. But I took my first sip and it was the most delicious apple cider I had ever had.
That's right, it turned out to be Woodchuck's Hard Apple Cider, and it was marvelous. Sweet without being over the top and very smooth and refreshing. I didn't really even notice the "Hard" part of it until later on. It crept up on me like a Creaper...
While not technically a beer, this one is definitely worth a try. I know I'll be looking forward to trying it again. It's just a shame the glass cost me almost $6. It was worth it though.
