Every journey has it's beginnings. For me, that was with the Mother's Brewing Company in Springfield, Missouri.
My Brother-In-Law had invited me to take a tour of a new brewery that had just opened up in Downtown Springfield and it sounded like fun. I enjoyed a good beer every now and again. What I didn't realize was just how eye opening of an experience it was going to be. Before visiting the brewery, I had never experienced the fullness of what a beer could actually be.
That was almost a year ago now. Hard to believe. Mother's hold a special place in my heart, and my fridge, since they are the brewery who pulled me in. It's hard to put a finger on which of their selections is my favorite as they are all so unique and different.
Three Blind Mice, a darker beer, was my immediate favorite. Big and full of so many different layers of flavor. It is so complex and I feel like I get a different experience with each bottle. One time, I'll really taste chocolate from the dark roasted malts. The next, the hops will come through more. The next, it might be something completely different. I love this beer. After that first tour, I bought a Growler of Three Blind Mice to take home with me. They currently have an Imperial Three Blind Mice, but I have yet to try it.
Last fall, they had a Mr. Pumpkin, a pumpkin spice flavored beer. Talk about amazing! It was unfortunately a single-batch brew, so there wasn't a lot of it available, but I really hope they decide to bring it back again this fall. It was sweet, like a pumpkin pie should be, but not over the top. It reminded me of all those Thanksgiving meals of my childhood, just in liquid form with a slight kick.
During the winter months, they introduced Winter Grind. This is their Coffee Stout brewed with espresso from another local business, The Mudhouse. I love coffee so this brew was a natural fit for me. It is a medium stout, so it has richness already, plus the espresso on top make for one heck of an experience. Great beer to have as a lunchtime treat, especially since it has enough caffeine in it to get you through the afternoon! I have my last 6-pack of this in the fridge at home now since they've brewed their last batch. I'm saving it to make it stretch!
Beyond the three I have here, they have a great selection of other seasonal and special brews, plus their "standard" line of Tow Head and Little Helper. If you ever see a Mother's bottle on the shelf, give it a try and you wont be disappointed. Better yet, if you're ever in downtown Springfield, stop on by and take a tour of the brewery.
